How to get hereJourney fact:
Market Harborough hides an intriguing secret: its Old Grammar School, built in 1614, was uniquely designed to stand on wooden stilts. This distinctive feature was not merely for aesthetics but served a practical purpose—allowing the town's market to continue operating underneath the building, sheltered from the elements. The stilts supported the school above, making it an early example of efficient, multifunctional architecture in a small English market town.
Journey Overview
This is a fascinating journey as the bus leaves pretty Market Harborough behind with its medieval feel, charming independent shops, coloured buildings (a multitude of colours and shades!) and churches. It’s a tree-lined venture for a few miles before the open Leicestershire countryside envelops both sides of the bus as the pretty village of Kibworth Beachamp is passed through with its delightful market square. Then onto Great Glen, as the scenery becomes even more rural, with The Grand Union Canal close by. As with all the villages on this fab route, the houses and cottages are resplendent with perfectly manicured front gardens and nearly trimmed hedges as well as an array of architecture from a range of different eras.
The bright lights of Leicester beckon but its a languid ride through Oadby, which is more built up, but full of character. The big expanse of Leicester Racecourse is on the left and the Botanic Gardens not far from the bus on the right as the bus winds its way down London Road, pass an eclectic mix of shops, Indian restaurants, churches and University residences, past the railway station and into the pulsating heart of this diverse and wonderful City.
