How to get hereJourney Overview
Two cultural hotspots in Manchester and Glasgow are connected by scenery that combines undulating green hills, rugged, craggy landscapes and snow-topped mountains on this great Megabus link.
Leaving the eclectic, hustle and bustle of Manchester behind, the bus soon finds itself passing the fascinating and picturesque Lancaster city, then straddling the Lake District with its eye-catching hilly and in some parts, mountainous terrain and gateway to beautiful villages. Two National Parks, one on either side of the bus – Lake District and Yorkshire Dales on the other, this is a trip like no other.
Onto Carlisle, a market town, deep in the heart of Cumbria and a haven for Celts and Scots in years gone by, but also fabulous countryside that gets ever more hilly, the further north the bus travels and over the Scottish border, past the battlefields of Robert the Bruce, close to Dumfries and Gretna Green. It’s a landscape of rolling farmland, forests and Belie cow before oh so gradually, slate-roofed cottages, give way to a growing, sprawling metropolis and the city of Glasgow, seeped in culture, heritage and a lively nightlife, as well as a gateway to stunning, scenic adventures across West Scotland and beyond.
Planning to spread the journey over two days?
If you’d like a leisurely journey, then our suggestion is a stop-off at Lancaster, a small city with a great history and plenty to see and do. The medieval Lancaster Castle sits on a hilltop and has 19th century prison cells and fabulous views of the River Lune. The Lancaster City Museum also has fascinating displays of the city’s past and its army regiment in a Georgian building. There’s also woodland walks, a butterfly house and coastal views in Williamson Park and an invigorating insight into Lancaster’s seafaring history at the Maritime Museum. Lancaster’s Charter Market stalls on a Wednesday and Saturday offer copious culinary delights, so too the Lancaster City football team who play in the Northern Premier League at their lovely ground just on the edge of the City Centre. There’s also some fantastic lock-free canal walks traversing Lancaster and you can board a Lancaster boat to sit back, relax and take in the City from the water!
