Journey Overview

As the bus pulls out of Leicester Haymarket Bus Station, the city’s urban hustle and bustle fades, of varied architecture, wonderful small independent shops, restaurants, with Indian cuisine a proud speciality and tree-lined roads. Heading north, the scenery shifts from the concrete bustle to the leafy suburbs. Passing through Thurmaston, the bus cruises by a mix of modern shops and older red-brick terraces. Soon, it skirts the edge of Watermead Country Park, a glimpse of serene lakes and lush greenery flashing by. The urban gives way to the peaceful sight of the Grand Union Canal, its calm waters lined with narrowboats, reflecting the overhanging trees.

As the bus moves into Syston, the landscape balances between the suburban and rural. Houses become more spaced, with gardens blooming with colour. This is leafy Leicestershire at its best! The road leads past fields, where grazing sheep dot the green, framed by hedgerows and the occasional grand oak tree. Entering Queniborough, the village’s charm emerges with its stone cottages and the spire of St. Mary’s Church rising above. The pace slows here, the road narrowing, lined with ivy-covered walls and neat flowerbeds.

Onward to Rearsby, the bus passes the Horse and Groom, an old-world pub with hanging baskets overflowing with vibrant flowers. Across the way, open fields stretch out, framed by distant woodland. The bus continues to East Goscote, where the view opens up to Tinkers Dell, a patch of green space surrounded by neat homes and the village’s tidy streets.

The countryside deepens as the bus approaches Kirby Bellars. Rolling fields, golden in late summer, lie under wide skies. The bus stops opposite Kirby Hall, a stately building partially hidden by ancient trees, hinting at its historical grandeur.

Finally, the bus pulls into Melton Mowbray, where quaint brick buildings and bustling markets signal arrival. The journey ends at Windsor Street, where the mix of town charm and surrounding countryside lingers as a vivid memory.
