Journey fact:

An intriguing fact about Shepshed, is that it was once home to a unique underground ice house. Built in the 18th century, this ice house was used to store ice harvested from nearby ponds during winter, which was then used throughout the year to preserve food. The structure, which is quite rare for a village of its size, was a significant technological advance in its time.

Journey Overview

As the bus departs from Leicester’s St Margaret’s Bus Station, it eases into the hustle of the city, classic Leicester, a mish-mash of modernity and older architecture, alongside independent shops, small bars and abundant Indian restaurants. It’s a cultural hub of activity, a wonderful eclectic mix of city life as the bus makes its way towards the A6, where the scenery begins to shift. The urban density gradually fades, giving way to a more suburban landscape. Houses with red brick walls and tidy gardens start to dominate the view.

Passing Birstall, the Red Hill Circle looms ahead. It’s a major roundabout with a mix of fast-food outlets, petrol stations, and a few scattered shops. Beyond the roundabout, the bus moves along the edge of Birstall, where tree-lined streets give way to more open spaces. The land stretches out with pockets of green fields dotted with small residential clusters.

The countryside becomes more prominent as the bus heads toward Rothley. The historic village is quaint, with traditional stone cottages, narrow lanes, and the ancient Cross Green standing quietly in the centre of the village. The surroundings are lush, with tall trees and wide expanses of farmland rolling into the distance.

Continuing through Quorndon, the view is dominated by the Fox Inn, a charming, ivy-clad pub that stands as a centerpiece of this picturesque village. The streets are quieter here, with a mix of old stone houses and newer homes, all framed by mature trees.

Loughborough arrives with a sudden burst of activity. The bus passes Fennel Street, where the town’s architecture is a blend of Victorian red-brick buildings and modern structures. Soon, it moves past Pitsford Drive, with its suburban housing estates, schools, and parks.

Finally, the journey leaves Loughborough behind as the bus heads into Shepshed. The scenery returns to green fields and open skies, a peaceful transition before the bus reaches its final stop outside the Bull Ring. The heart of Shepshed is more intimate, with small shops, local businesses, and a sense of quiet village life.
