The Royal Citadel
About:
The Royal Citadel, located on the eastern side of Plymouth Hoe in Devon, England, is a historic fortress constructed in the 17th century. Built between 1665 and 1670 during the reign of King Charles II, it served as a defensive stronghold to protect the important naval base and port of Plymouth from potential enemy attacks. Designed by Sir Bernard de Gomme, the Citadel features a star-shaped layout typical of military architecture of the period. Today, it remains an active military installation, housing a garrison of the British Army. While access to the interior is restricted, visitors can admire the Citadel’s imposing exterior and learn about its significance in defending Plymouth throughout history.
