The Christmas market is right in the heart of the City Centre with its colourful shops and bubbly pubs, hosting traditional Irish music and with street performers outside. Eyre Square and Shop Street (which kind of ‘tells it how it is!’) aren’t just great for yuletide fun but they are ‘must visit’ places all year round to take in the atmosphere and for a bit of retail therapy.
Then, there’s the standout Galway Cathedral with its intricate artwork – it’s a grand, old monument, prominent on the horizon here!
Take a stroll under the Spanish Arch, which is part of the city’s historic wall and where you can explore the Galway City Museum to delve into the region’s history and heritage.
After all this culture and historical fascination, a leisurely scenic sojourn is timely and a walk along the picturesque Salthill promenade overlooking Galway Bay which offers breathtaking views and a fab coastal atmosphere.
Further afield, there are delights aplenty – at the historic fishing village of Claddagh, known for its iconic Claddagh ring and fascinating heritage. Connemara has to be visited too – an out of city exploration of rugged beauty, where you’ll be marvelling at the unforgettable landscapes, including the Twelve Bens mountains, Connemara National Park, and Kylemore Abbey.
The joy of Galway, apart from the magical scenery, is that there’s something for everyone. The vibrant traditional music scene, with its talented musicians performing live in pubs can be enjoyed alongside devouring Galway’s culinary delights by joining food tours that showcase the city’s diverse food scene, from fresh seafood to artisanal chocolates.
Dance yourself dizzy!
Galway is a city that seduces those who love their art and if you’re visiting in July, don’t miss the renowned Galway International Arts Festival, celebrating diverse arts with performances, exhibitions, and cultural events. A visit to Galway isn’t complete without watching Irish dancers and there are festivals, fleadhs, céilís and Irish dancing championships held all round county Galway throughout the year along with shows like Trad on the Prom, based in Leisureland Theatre or Mise Éire with shows in The Taibhdhearc Theatre and The Galmont Hotel and Spa.
A retreat from the vibe!
The sound of a hornpipe, fiddle, fife or polka is never far away when wandering the streets of Galway and whilst vibrant music and eclectic hustle and bustle is all very well, sometimes serenity is welcome! For such respite, Connemara National Park isn’t just to gaze at but it really is a ‘must visit’ destination – it’s an amazing 2,000 hectares of mountains, bogs, heaths, grasslands and forests. Hill walking is a favourite activity in the park and there is an abundance of wildlife to be spotted, including the famous Connemara pony. There’s also a fab tea room with some real treats on offer.
For the more sporty, then you can rent a bike or embark further afield on coastal walks to explore the stunning landscapes surrounding Galway, including the Cliffs of Moher or the Aran Islands.
